
Bears Earn Senior Day Win Over Alabama State

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis program (11-8, 3-2) closed out the home schedule with a 4-0 win against Alabama State (7-9, 7-2) on Senior Day at LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Senior Mary Weston Courville was honored before the match for her four years as a Bear.
Mercer took the doubles point after wins on court one and two. Courville teamed up with Teodora Ristic at the first slot to beat Francesca Duca and Lizaveta Demchnko, 6-1. The pair is tied for the team-lead at 12 wins this season with Camilla Ciaccia and Eden Schlagenhauf. The latter duo won on court two, 6-3, over Urska Velec and Bea Acena.
The teams were playing to clinch, and Mercer won on the top three courts to secure the victory. Ristic swept Demchnko 6-0, 6-0 on court one for the second point. Courville completed her 2-0 performance on Senior Day with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Velec on court two. The senior leads the team with 13 singles wins this spring. Schlagenhauf earned the clinching point at the third slot, winning 6-2, 6-3 against Duca.
When the match was clinched, the Bears had taken two of three first sets on the remaining courts and was leading in the second set on all three. Marina de Diego Quinones was one game away from winning on court five, posting a 6-1, 5-3 score. Ciaccia dropped the first set on court four but led 3-0 in the second. On court six, Kristin Yordanova won the first set 6-2 and led 4-1 in the second at the conclusion of the match.
UP NEXT: Mercer will play its final two matches on the road at Furman on Wednesday, April 12 and at UNCG on Sunday, April 16.
