BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mercer men's tennis team got singles victories from three different players in a morning matchup with Samford, but fell in all three doubles matches against Chattanooga, on opening-day action of the Samford Invitational in the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion.
The short-handed Bears, playing without the services of Brazilian Lucas Dini, tacked up wins by Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, but dropped some tight matches the rest of the way out in dropping the morning matchup to the Bulldogs. Samford's Darcy Nicholls rebounded from an opening set loss to Samuel MacLeod with tiebreaker wins in both the second and third sets, while Santiago Arredondo spoiled the Mercer debut for Victor Putter with a tight 7-6, 7-5 win over the South African.
In the afternoon doubles matchup with the defending Southern Conference champions, Putter and No. 3 doubles mate Andrew Branicki nearly pulled off a win at No. 3 doubles, but fell to the UTC duo by a 7-6 final. UTC's Peyton Gatti and Jakub Jupa held off Mercer's duo of Stefanovic and Fouilhoux, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.
The Orange & Black will continue play at the 3-day event on Saturday with a 9 a.m. singles matchup against UAB on Saturday morning, and will tangle with the host Bulldogs in an 11:45 a.m. doubles tilt.
