BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nemanja Stefanovic tacked up his second singles victory in as many days to highlight action for the Mercer men's tennis team as the Bears wrapped up second-day action at the Samford Invitational on Saturday in the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion.
Stefanovic – a straight-sets winner over Samford's Maxwell Giddens on Friday – made short work of UAB's Onibej Valetr on Saturday morning with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over the Blazers newcomer. Samuel McLeod topped UAB junior Georgios Nouchakis by 6-3, 6-1 scores, while Andrew Branicki toughed out a 3-set (6-0, 2-6, 6-0) triumph over Parker Bradbary.
The afternoon doubles competition against Samford fell on the Bulldogs side of the net, although the Bears made SU work for it at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. The Orange & Black duo of Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux were on the wrong end of a 6-4 outcome, while Branicki and Victor Putter succumbed at No. 3 doubles by a tough 7-5 count.
The 3-day event is being played in a "hidden duals" format which consists of a series of head-to-head matches between two teams. While the individual results of all completed matches are official, there is no team score recorded.
The Bears will close out their stay in the Iron City on Sunday with a morning singles competition against Chattanooga, as well as an afternoon doubles tilt with UAB.
