CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Lucas Dini dropped a tough third-set tiebreaker with Buffalo's Chang Tang at No. 2 singles, but the Bulls rolled to straight-sets wins on the other five courts to fuel a 7-0 victory over the Mercer men's tennis team in a neutral site matchup on Saturday afternoon in Coral Gables, Fla.
Dini toughed out a 6-4 victory in his opening set with Tang, but fell 6-4 in the second set before falling on the wrong end of the superset. Senior Samuel Barrow gave UB's Yu-Shiang Huang all he could handle at No. 6 singles as well, but ultimately fell in a close one, 6-4 and 7-5.
Buffalo's tandem of Tang and Huang won their No. 1 doubles matchup with Dini and Samuel MacLeod by a 6-3 count, and the Bulls clinched the doubles point on court No. 2 when Michael Malkin and Daniils Snaiders took care of MU's Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux, 6-3.
Mercer's duo of Barrow and senior Victor Putter were engrossed in a 5-5 back-and-forth at No. 3 doubles when the doubles point was clinched, but were ultimately awarded the victory via opponent retirement.
The Bears (0-4) will open the home portion of their 2023-24 campaign on Sunday (January 28) when they welcome Emmanuel and ABAC to the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center for a men's and women's tri-match. Both sets of Bears will take on Emmanuel in an 11 a.m. matchup, before going toe-to-toe with ABAC at 3 p.m. Admission to all 2023-24 Mercer men's and women's tennis home matches is free.
Sunday's matchups will also mark the spring opener for the Mercer women's tennis team.
