MACON – Mercer men's tennis head coach Eric Hayes added valuable depth to his 2024-25 roster on Monday morning as Iowa Central Community College standouts Amen Prince Gandonou and Hod'Abalo Isak Padio inked their names to National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers with the Bears.
Â
Both junior college standouts will make the move to Macon sporting International Tennis Federation world rankings, while both are Davis Cup qualifiers for their respective countries as well. The duo paced Iowa Central to a No. 6 ranking in last season's final International Tennis Association (ITA) Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Â
Gandonou, a native of Cotonou, Benin, closed out the 2022-23 campaign for the Tritons sporting a No. 38 individual ranking among junior college standouts after making an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Nationals Flight No. 3. A current Davis Cup competitor for Benin, he boasts a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 11.25, and ascended to as high as No. 617 in the ITF world rankings last year.
Â
Padio, a product of Lome, Togo, finished the 2022-23 season in the No. 16 position of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, and nestled into the No. 11 spot with Gandonou in a listing of the nation's best NJCAA doubles squads. Boasting a UTR of 11.32, Padio is a former holder of the No. 1 spot in the African U-16 rankings, and has climbed as high as No. 219 in the ITF World Rankings. A current competitor for his homeland in the Davis Cup, he also made a splash at last season's NJCAA Nationals with a semifinal appearance in Flight No. 2.
