
Bears Topple Spartans For Road Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Mercer volleyball team moved to 15-4 and 5-1 in SoCon play, taking down UNC Greensboro in four sets on Friday night. The Bears hit .230 as a team and picked up 10 aces in the victory.
Senior Gia Padilla was superb for Mercer, registering season-highs in points (22.5), kills (15) and aces (6). Fellow senior Skye Ekes also put up double-digit kills with 13 on a .370 hitting percentage. Brooke Phillips recorded 38 assists and added four block assists, while MeMe Davis led the team with 23 digs.Â
The Bears will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina tomorrow, taking on the Wofford Terriers. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Richardson Indoor Stadium.Â

SET 1 I 25-21               | UNCG jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first set, but Gia Padilla would take over for the Bears. The senior recorded three kills, a block and three service aces to give the Bears an 8-7 lead. After the Spartans grabbed the lead back at 12-11, the Bears went on a 4-0 run and didn't look back to take the first set. | |
SET 2 I 25-19 | Following a back-and-forth start to the second set, Mercer used a 3-0 run capped by a kill from Skyler Bumpers to take a 9-6 lead. The Bears did not reliquish the lead for the remainder of the set to go up two sets to none. | |
SET 3 I 16-25 | UNCG pounced on the Bears early in set three, using a 4-0 run to take a 10-3 lead. The Bears made things interesting late in the set, but the Spartans took the set 25-16 to extend the match. | |
SET 4 I 25-21 | As was the theme of the night, Gia Padilla took control of the match in the fourth set, posting two kills followed by consecutive aces to put the Bears up 4-1. The Bears and Spartans traded blows until Mercer was able to go on a 4-0 run that included another ace from Padilla to take a 21-16 lead. Skye Ekes delivered the knockout punch for the Bears, scoring three of the final four Mercer points to give the Bears the victory. |
