
Volleyball Welcomes The Citadel, Western Carolina

MACON - The Mercer volleyball team has taken over first place in the Southern Conference after an impact win against Wofford last Saturday, Oct. 19. The Bears look to add two more conference wins to their record as they welcome The Citadel and Western Carolina to Hawkins Arena this weekend.
The Bears will start off the weekend with a match against The Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. These two squads faced each other earlier in the season to open up conference play on Sept. 28 in Charleston, S.C. Mercer topped The Citadel 3-1, giving the Bulldogs their second conference loss on the season. The Citadel have recently moved up to fourth in the conference with a SoCon record of 4-4 and an overall record of 10-9.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Bears will return to the court in Hawkins Arena to take on the Catamounts at 7 p.m. The two programs were originally scheduled for a match earlier in the season in Cullowhee, N.C. but the match was postponed due to damages caused by Hurricane Helene. Western Carolina currently sits at 1-5 in the conference with their lone win coming from a match against The Citadel in the SoCon opener.
The Bears continue to dominate in the service aces category with a team total of 180, leading the SoCon and the NCAA. The freshmen for Mercer have been dominant for the squad with Lou Johnson leading the conference in hitting percentage at .326 with at least 100 attempts and MeMe Davis sits at third in the conference averaging 5.29 digs per set. In the match against UNC Greensboro last weekend, Gia Padilla recorded a career-high of 20 points and registered her seventh double-double of the season. Brooke Phillips leads the Bears with 731 assists and 54 service aces.
The match on Friday nigh against The Citadel will be streamed on ESPN+ but the match on Saturday against Western Carolina will not be streamed due to a scheduling conflict, live stats will be provided by the Mercer athletics department.
