Bears Fall To Wofford 1-0

MACON – The Mercer men's soccer team fell to the visiting Wofford Terriers 1-0 at Betts Stadium on Saturday night.
The Bears controlled possession early in the match, with Segun Afolabi putting up the first shot of the night in the first minute. Mercer threatened again the 31st minute, but the Bears were not able to get a shot off before a Wofford clearance.
The Bears would put up two more shots before the half, but the match remained scoreless at the halftime intermission.
The Bears continued to apply pressure in the early stages of the second period, earning two corner kicks and a free kick in the first ten minutes of the half. Carlos Santamaria put a shot on target in the 55th minute, but it was saved by Wofford keeper Leo Ledin.
In the 80th minute, the tie was broken, as a goal by Wofford's Villads Landsperg put the Terriers ahead.
The Bears put together a couple of attacks in the final ten minutes, including a Barzee Blama header on goal in the 81st minute that was saved. Tommy Redd nearly leveled the match in the 84th minute, but his shot went wide right of the post.
For the match, Mercer held a 9-3 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears had eight corner kicks to the Terriers' three.
The Bears move to 5-4-6 on the season and 1-2-1 in SoCon play with the loss.
