
Bears Welcome Wofford, UNCG For Regular Season Finale

MACON - The Mercer volleyball team will close out regular season play this weekend as they host Wofford and UNC Greensboro for two crucial Southern Conference matches. The Orange & Black still stand at first place in the conference with an in conference record of 12-2 and an overall record of 22-5.
The Bears are coming off of a three-match week where they defeated Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C. 3-0 on Nov. 6. The next day, Mercer traveled to Greenville, S.C. to take on the Furman Paladins, ultimately taking their second loss in conference play and fifth overall 3-1. The Bears then returned to Hawkins Arena to host Samford in a Saturday night match to take a big win over the Bulldogs, sweeping them 3-0.
Mercer battled Wofford earlier in the season on Oct. 19, resulting in the Bears coming out on top with a 3-1 win over the Terriers. Wofford is currently knocking on the first place seed door and right behind Mercer in the SoCon standings with a record of 11-3 in-conference and 19-7 overall. The Terriers are also having a historic season with a win over #15 ranked Tennessee back in September, defeating the Vols 3-2.
UNC Greensboro currently sits at the bottom of the conference standings, just below Western Carolina, with a SoCon record of 2-12 and an overall record of 7-19. The two squads met back on Oct. 18 in Greensboro, N.C. with the Bears coming out of the match with a 3-1 victory. The Spartan's two lone conference wins came against Samford and Western Carolina.
The Bears continue to dominate the record books, becoming the winningest team in program history. Skye Ekes has been lights out at the net with 374 kills on the season, averaging 3.70 per set. Freshman middle blocker Lou Johnson leads the Mercer offense in hitting percentage at .315 and has added 159 kills at the net. Freshman libero MeMe Davis made an instant impact on the program as the libero all season long for the Bears recording 489 digs, including a season-best 37 digs in the match against Furman. Brooke Phillips continues to be unstoppable at the service line, leading the SoCon in service aces with 64.
The Bears are set to face Wofford on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. for their Yellow Game to raise awareness and to show support for Ali Waldon in her battle with osteosarcoma. The Orange & Black will then return to Hawkins Arena on Saturday night, Nov, 16 at 6 p.m. for Senior Night where the Bears will honor their three seniors and everything they have done for the record-breaking program.
