LAST TIME OUT Twelve Mercer players scored and the Bears' defense held Trinity Baptist to just 26 percent shooting from the field as Mercer dominated Trinity Baptist in a 101-43 win Wednesday night inside Hawkins Arena.  Three Bears scored in double figures led by Tyler Johnson's 16 points and another three players added nine points each, as Mercer eclipsed 100 points in a game for the second time this season. Mercer shot 48 percent from the field, but the Bears' defense also showed up big holding Trinity Baptist to just 13 first half points and 1-of-19 (5%) from three-point range on the night. |

ABOUT THE BEARS The Bears are led by first-year head coach Ryan Ridder, the 30th head coach in program history, who comes to Macon from UT Martin, where he led the Skyhawks to the 2023-24 OVC regular season title. Coach Ridder has emphasized all offseason that this year's team will be tough, together, and unselfish. The 2024-25 edition of Mercer men's basketball is comprised of three returners and 11 newcomers. Jah Quinones, Alex Holt and TJ Grant return to Macon for the 2024-25 campaign, having served vital roles for the Bears a year ago. Holt posted the highest single-season shooting percentage in program history last season at 65.6%. |

SCOUTING SOUTH ALABAMA South Alabama plays in the Sun Belt and is off to a 1-2 start this season. The Jaguars are coming off a 64-54 loss at Ole Miss on Tuesday. The lone win on the season was over Nicholls, 70-64. Fifth-year senior Myles Corey has averaged 17.3 points and 8.0 assists in the Jags' first three contests, including a 20-point, 11-assist performance in the season opener against Central Michigan. Fellow fifth-year senior Juda Brown has been the Jaguars best three-point shooter so far this season. Brown has put up 15 points or more in every game this season, knocking down a Sun Belt-leading 14 total three-pointers. Brown set a new season-high against Ole Miss with 16 points on 4-of-11 shooting from deep. South Alabama has played solid defense throughout the 2024-25 season. The Jags rank first in the Sun Belt in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 38.5 percent shooting from the field and fourth in scoring defense, limiting teams to 67.5 points per game. Three Jags average double figures in scoring– Corey (17.3), Brown (15.3), and Dylan Fasoyiro (10.7). |
