Mercer Opens Season, Hosts UNC Asheville On Monday

MACON – The Mercer women's basketball team will officially lift the lid on its 2024-25 regular season schedule on Monday when the Bears suit up to host UNC Asheville in a 7 p.m. contest at Hawkins Arena.

Fans unable to make the trip to Macon can still follow the action for free via a live statistics link provided by the MU athletics department. The game is also scheduled to be broadcasted live on ESPN+, as well as on the Sportsmic App with veteran Mercer broadcaster Rick Cameron handling the play-by-play duties.

EXHIBITION SEASON
The Bears shot better than 52 percent in the opening half and scored 29 points off of 22 Young Harris turnovers as the Bears successfully kicked off the 2024-25 season with a dominant 61-28 exhibition victory over the visiting Mountain Lions on Wednesday. It was the lone preseason exhibition contest for both sides.

MERCER/UNC ASHEVILLE SERIES
Mercer leads the all-time series with UNC Asheville, 5-4, but the squads have not met on the hardwood since MU's 61-47 home triumph over the Bulldogs on Dec. 30, 2018. Mercer kicked off the series with a 114-96 win over UNCA at the Carson-Newman Invitational on Dec. 8, 1984, but the sides have split four matchups in both Macon and Asheville, N.C., since that contest. The Bears will ride a two-game series win streak into Monday as well.

SCOUTING UNC ASHEVILLE
The Bulldogs returned seven letterwinners from last year's 11-20 squad that finished ninth in the final Big South standings. Among the returnees is senior Lalmani Simmons who averaged 10.1 points and 2.2 rebounds off of the bench for UNCA in 2023-24. First-year head coach Tynesha Lewis also welcomed eight newcomers to the program since her hiring in April.

ON DECK
The Bears will make the long trip to South Florida on Saturday to take on Florida Atlantic inside the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena in Boca Raton, Fla. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
