INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Mercer men's basketball guard Tyler Johnson, who was recently named SoCon Player of the Week, was 1-of-5 players named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week list.
The USBWA's national weekly honors program highlights five national Division I players each week in conjunction with the Oscar Robertson Trophy. Johnson joins Devin Haid (Central Connecticut), Ian Schiefflin (Clemson), Sean Smith (Western Illinois) and Sebastian Thomas (Rhode Island) on this week's list.
Johnson led the Bears in scoring in both of the team's games this week, scoring 24 points in Wednesday's win over West Georgia and 26 points in Sunday's win over Stetson. Johnson played a team-high 34 minutes in the 86-72 win over the Wolves on Wednesday and was efficient in his scoring efforts, shooting 9-15 from the field and 5-11 from three. He continued his hot shooting on Sunday, shooting 8-13 from the field, 6-10 from three and 4-4 from the free throw line to help Mercer to an 89-83 win in overtime and led the team once again with 44 minutes played.
The USC-Aiken transfer has made an immediate impact in Macon, leading the team in scoring (17.0 ppg), three pointers made (29), three-point percentage (45.3%) and minutes played (30.8 mpg) this season.
Mercer returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 15 hosting Chicago State at Hawkins Arena for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
