
Shorthanded Bears Drop Match To Georgia Southern

MACON, Ga. - The Mercer women's tennis team dropped its match to Georgia Southern, 4-0, Thursday from the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center in Macon.
Playing without three key members of its usual starting lineup presented opportunities for other players on Mercer's team to play in an early regular season match.
The day started out with doubles action where Georgia Southern won both matches that finished. Georgia Southern's Ninon Martinache and Sonja Keranen defeated Mercer's Mariella Minetti and Lekha Varudandi, 6-2. The other doubles win for the Eagles came from Sophie Wagemaker and Mackenzie Leopold who defeated Mercer's Kristin Yordanova and Kennedi Jones, 6-3.
With Georgia Southern earning the point in doubles, Lea Falentin and Emilia Cosatto's match went unfinished with the duo leading their match 5-4 over Georgetown's Silvia Martinez and Lindsay Tulenko.
In singles play, Georgia Southern won all three matches that finished, to earn then 4-0 win. Georgia Southern's Ninon Martinache defeated Minetti, 6-1, 6-1. Then, on court three Georgia Southern's Lindsay Tulenko defeated Cosatto in straight sets by the same score, 6-1, 6-1. Paula Hijos of Georgia Southern gave the Eagles the win by defeating Jones, 6-3, 6-1.
Three singles matches went unfinished. Georgia Southern's Silvia Martinez was leading her match over Falentin, 6-2, 5-4. Nanaka Kijima of Georgia Southern was leading her match over Yordanova, 6-2, 5-2 and on court five, Mercer's Lekha Varudandi was playing well in the second set in which she had a 4-0 lead after dropping the first set, 6-4 to Georgia Southern's Mackenzie Leopold before the match was called.
Up next for the Bears is a trip up to Clemson, South Carolina to play the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 3:30 p.m.
