SERIES HISTORY
Thursday's game between Mercer and Western Carolina will be the 29th all-time meeting between the two programs. Mercer has dominated the series winning 27 of the first 28 games. Mercer won the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, 87-59.
SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA
Western Carolina went 9-21 last season in 2022-23. The Catamounts went 2-12 in conference play.
Mercer won the first meeting between the two teams this season, 87-59 in Macon back on January 20. The Catamounts were picked to finish last in the Southern Conference (SoCon) preseason coaches poll.
Western Carolina is 1-8 in conference play, with its lone win coming at home against UNCG. Western Carolina has struggled to find its offense this season as they have scored more than 60 points just twice through nine conference games. They rank seventh in the SoCon in scoring offense at 56.1 points per game. They do however rank fourth in the SoCon in field goal percentage at 39.7 percent.
Part of the problem has been getting up shots as the Catamounts turn the ball over more than any other team in the conference and have attempted the second fewest field goal attempts in conference play in the SoCon.
One area offensively Western Carolina does well is moving and sharing the ball as they average the most assists per game in the SoCon at 13.54 per game. Junior guard Chelsea Wooten leads the Catamounts in scoring at 11.3 points per game. Forward Lonasia Brewer is the team's leading rebounder at 5.8 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mercer women's basketball team held Chattanooga to just 38.8 percent shooting from the field, but shots couldn't fall for the Bears either as Chattanooga defeated Mercer, 61-52 in Hawkins Arena Saturday.
The Bears had two players score in double figures, led by Mackenzie Johnson, who had 11 points. Deja Williams added 10 points and Briana Peguero added seven points, two steals and two blocks.Â
NEED TO KNOW
Cianté Downs is averaging the third most offensive rebounds per game in the SoCon in conference play at 3.3 per game
