Bears Set To Open 2024 Season At High Point

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse program will travel to High Point for their first regular season game on Saturday at 11 a.m. Saturday's game is the opening game of the 2024 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse season.

SERIOUS HISTORY
Saturday's game will be the 11th game between these two programs. The last time these the squads met was Senior Day on April 30, 2022, where the Bears took home the 14-11 win against the Panthers. The Bears were led by Nick Rockefeller and Sean Goldsmith who each scored three goals.

LAST SEASON
Head coach Ryan Danehy finished his first season at Mercer with 6-10 overall record and 5-4 record in the ASUN conference. The Bears last stepped on the field to face off against Bellarmine in the ASUN Conference Tournament.

The Bears return leading scorer Parker Junod (30 goals, 18 assists) who was three points shy of breaking the Mercer school record of 51 points set by current assistant coach Sean Goldsmith. Michael Frederick (21 goals, 9 assists) looks to improve on his freshman season after being named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Attack man Taylor Dooley (15 goals, 13 assists) and midfielder Matt O'Connor (16 goals, 3 assists) each return for one more year for the Bears.

SCOUTING HIGH POINT
High Point is led by Jon Torpey who is entering his 14th season as head coach for the Panthers. The Panthers finished last season 9-8 overall, with a 2-3 record in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Their final game in the 2023 season was in the A10 Conference Championship where they would fall to the Richmond Spiders, 15-8.

The Panthers have multiple key returners, one being A-10 Preseason All-Conference team Member Nick Rizzo. Rizzo finished last season with 17 goals and 16 assists. The Panthers also return their two leading point scorers in Jack Van Overbeke (37 goals, 41 assists) and Brayden Mayea (45 goals, 17 assists).
