MACON – Visiting and 20^th-ranked Clemson scored 15 goals in the opening half to take a big lead into the intermission, and then held off upset-minded Mercer in the third and fourth periods on the way to a 22-10 victory over the Bears on Tuesday afternoon at Five Star Stadium.

The setback snapped a two-game win streak for the Bears (2-2) who have dropped both of their home contests this season to Atlantic Coast Conference foes. The nationally-ranked Tigers (5-1) improved to 3-0 in true road games this season with the result.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mercer lit up the scoreboard first on senior Gabby DiVirgilio's goal just more than a minute into the contest.
Clemson closed out the opening stanza with seven unanswered goals, including two apiece from Claire Bockstie and Kayla Macleod.
The squads traded goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but the Tigers eventually drug a 15-5 advantage into the intermission.
Clemson pushed its lead out to a game-best 11 points, 16-5, on Shannon Brazier's score just 1:08 into the third quarter, but senior Maddi Koury scored goals less than two minutes apart to shrink the deficit back down to single digits.
The Tigers doubled up the Bears, 4-2, in the fourth quarter, and capped the scoring on the day with 1:40 to play on a goal from Tanner Scarola.

TOP BEARS

Mercer got multi-goal games from four different players – seniors Gabby DiVirgilio and Maddi Koury, junior Sami Lowinger and sophomore Caroline Glus.
Lowinger and Glus each added an assist as well to finish the afternoon with a team-best five points.
Gabby DiVirgilio and Caroline Glus both logged a team-high four shots on goal.
Emily Lamparter and Krissy Kowalski both played 30 minutes in net, and both goalies logged three saves.

NOTABLES

Both of Mercer's losses have now come at the hands of teams that call the Atlantic Coast Conference home. The Bears dropped their season opener to Virginia Tech at home on February 17.
Tuesday's matchup marked the first meeting between the Bears and Clemson.

UP NEXT

The Bears will close out a short two-game home stand on Saturday when they suit up to battle Coastal Carolina (2-3) at Five Star Stadium. Start time is slated for noon and admission to all 2024 Mercer Lacrosse home games is free.
