Bears Drop Pair Of Close Matches In Birmingham

MACON – Beach volleyball wrapped up day one of the Blazer Beach Bash Saturday, falling 3-2 to Southern Miss and North Alabama.

In the morning matchup against Southern Miss, the No. 4 pairing of Liv Diaz and Kathryn Corbett defeated Jessica Fairly and Madison Baldridge in straight sets 21-11, 21-14.

After dropping the opening frame 14-21 on court three, Lexi Polychrones and Reese Hood bounced back and took the second set 21-16 to force a third. The duo outlasted the Golden Eagles 15-11 to earn a point for the Bears.

Liv Diaz and Kathryn Corbett once again shined on court four, defeating the Lions pair 21-16, 21-18. The pair have now won four of their last six matches.

The No. 5 pair of Alyssa Scoggins and Hollis Engel took the opening frame 21-16, but Sarah Larkin Lewis and Jelena Girod put the pressure on the duo in the second set as the match went into extra points, but the Bears came out on top 26-24.

The Bears will wrap up the Blazer Beach Bash against UAB Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
