
Bears Storm Back To Take Down Mocs

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Mercer women's tennis came from behind to defeat Chattanooga 4-3 on the road Saturday afternoon from the UTC Tennis Center in the regular season finale.
With the win, the Bears finished the regular season 13-7 and 4-3 in SoCon matches. It marks the second consecutive season the Bears have finished with a winning record in the SoCon.
Mercer finished tied for third in the SoCon standings with Samford and Wofford who also went 4-3 in the SoCon. With tiebreakers the Bears earned the No. 5 seed in the SoCon Tournament and will face No. 4 Wofford next Thursday, April 18 at 8:30 a.m. in Chattanooga.
In the doubles matches, Teodora Ristic and Marina de Diego Quinones won the first match 6-1 over Chattanooga's Emma Peeler and Caroline Gibbens. On court three, Chattanooga's Emma Pedretti and Margaret Manolache defeated Mariella Minetti and Tea Zivic 6-3. Therefore, the doubles point came down to the match on court one which did not disappoint, but ultimately Chattanooga's Rozalie Dohnalova and Alice Hall defeated Mercer's Lea Falentin and Emilia Cosatto 7-6 to take the doubles point.
After going down 1-0, the Bears dropped four of the six first sets in the singles matches. The Bears needed a great come from behind effort if they were to win the match.
Chattanooga's Alice Hall put the Mocs up 2-0 after defeating Marina de Diego Quinones 6-0, 7-5. Lea Falentin won got the Bears on the board when she defeated Caroline Gibbens of Chattanooga, 6-4, 6-2.
On court three, Emilia Cosatto fought back after dropping the first set to defeat Emma Peeler, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 which tied the match at two. Tea Zivic put the Bears up 3-2 after defeating Margaret Manolache of Chattanooga, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Then, Mariella Minetti clinched the match for the Bears winning in two sets over Emma Pedretti 7-5, 6-4. The last singles match went to Chattanooga's Rozalie Dohnalova who defeated Ristic in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
The Bears will now look forward to playing in the SoCon Championship held in Chattanooga. Mercer's first opponent is the No. 4 seed Wofford Terriers on Thursday April 18 at 8:30 a.m.Â
Wofford went 14-6 overall and 4-3 in SoCon play. The two teams met on March 29 of the regular season, with Wofford claiming a 5-2 win.
