Tobias Jonsson to Become First Mercer Golfer to Play in PGA Tour Event

Former Bear will compete in the 3M Open
MACON, Ga. - Tobias Jonsson will become the first Mercer golfer to play in a PGA Tour Event this week as he competes in the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota. Jonsson, a native of Huddinge, Sweden, earned an invitation to play in the tournament by winning the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational in April.Â

Jonsson was a two-time All-Southern Conference honoree during his time in Macon and played in two NCAA Regional Tournaments, earning the top seed among qualifying individuals in the 2024 Chapel Hill Regional. In addition to his victory at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, Jonsson won the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in October 2023. Jonsson was named the SoCon Player of the Week three times in his career and was selected to the PING East All-Region Team in 2022, 2023 and 2024.Â

Jonsson won the individual title at the 2022 International Golf Federation (IGF) World Team Amateur Championships to become the World Amateur Champion. He played his first two seasons of college golf at Young Harris College, where he was a member of the Mountain Lions' Peach Belt Conference Championship team in 2020-21. Â

Jonsson will tee off at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and 9:35 a.m. on Friday. His round on Friday will be broadcasted on ESPN+. He will be playing the event as an amateur and is set to turn professional after the United States Amateur Championship in August.Â
