Cross Country Opens Season on Friday at Covered Bridge Open

MACON, Ga. The Mercer men's and women's cross country team will kick off their 2024 seasons on Friday morning when the Bears head to North Carolina to take part in the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.Â
The Bears will be running on the Don Kennedy Trails at State Farm for the fourth-straight season and make the return to Appalachian State after both teams posted record numbers at the Firetower Project Run in 2023.
Last season, the men's team placed fifth overall with all scoring runners placing in the top 50. Junior Buck Ledford ran 25:58 to place 32nd and senior Jonathan Greene ran 26:06 for 36th place.
The women's team placed fourth overall with three in the top 15. Junior Olivia Jones placed 30th in 19:08 and senior Annette Rodriguez placed 35th in 19:24.
Covered Bridge Open will mark the first campaign for Cameron Ruppe at the helm for the Bears.
Friday's event is scheduled to get underway with the women's 5K race at 10 a.m. and the men's 6K race following shortly after at 10:40 a.m.
COMPETING TEAMS: Mercer, Western Carolina, USC Upstate, Winthrop, Appalachian State, South Carolina, UNC Asheville, High Point and Montreat.
