Jada Moorman and Sara Engels scored for the Bears
MACON, Ga. - Goals from Jada Moorman and Sara Engels within the first 20 minutes of play helped the Bears get out to a 2-0 lead in which they would only build on as Mercer defeated Auburn, 3-0 in an exhibition game Wednesday evening from Betts Stadium.
Shots were 9-5 in favor of Auburn with each team getting three corners on the day. In all, 22 players for the Bears saw the field Wednesday evening, including eight freshman.
Moorman got the scoring started in the ninth minute when she headed in a corner kick from Kendall Cook.
Less than 10 minutes later in the 18th minute, the Bears pressed high up the field and were rewarded for it as Engels blocked a long pass from an Auburn defender and beat everyone to the ball in the box and slotted a left-footed shot past the Auburn goalie to double Mercer's advantage.
The lone goal in the second half was an own goal from Auburn on a bad back pass to it's goalie in the 49th minute.

TOP BEARS |
+ Despite playing less than 15 minutes, Jada Moorman picked up where she left of from last season rising above the Auburn defenders and heading in the first goal of the game for the Bears. + Junior, Lena Dykes is one of the veteran players on Mercer's back line this season and certainly played like it, as Dykes played the full 90 minutes and came up with some strong tackles throughout the game in holding the Tigers scoreless. + All three goalies on the roster; Lindsay Bell, Maryn Weiger, and Avery Parker saw time in goal in getting the combined shutout. |
NOTABLES |
+ Mercer and Auburn have only met one time in the regular season - a 2-0 win for Auburn - but this marks Mercer's first win over the Tigers in either a regular season or exhibition game. + Moorman and Cook each had a team high two shots in the game + Freshmen Maggie Rollins and Marianna Rapani started in the back line for the Bears. |
UP NEXT |
Mercer will play its season opener next Thursday, August 15 at Kennesaw State. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET. |
