SERIES HISTORY
Friday's match marks the second meeting between the Bears and Roos. The first matchup came in 2022, a 1-1 draw in Macon. Then-freshman Tommy Redd assisted on the lone Mercer goal, which was scored by current assistant coach Dylan Gaither.
LAST TIME OUT
Mercer recorded its fifth straight shutout on Sunday for a 2-0 win over Southern Indiana on Senior Day. The win was the Bears' second in a row.
The Bears took control of the match early, taking the lead in the ninth minute on a goal from sophomore Barzee Blama. Blama received a pass from Segun Afolabi at the top right of the box and struck a screamer into the top of the net for his first points of the season.
Despite taking an early lead, the Mercer attack would not let up, putting up six shots in the first 24 minutes of play.
In the 27th minute, the Bears earned a corner kick, and Carlos Santamaria delivered a beautiful ball into the box for Sekou Agard to put into the top of the net with a header to extend the lead. Agard now leads the SoCon with four goals this season and has scored in three of the last four matches. His eight points on the year are already a career-high.
The Mercer back line continued its dominant play, holding the Screaming Eagles to seven shots and only one shot on goal. Sekou Agard, Natnael McDonald and Woodi Pondeca each played the full 90 minutes. Trevor McMullen made one save to move his clean sheet streak to five. His five shutouts this season lead the country. The senior now holds a season goals allowed average of 0.50 and has gone 489 minutes since conceding a goal.
For the game, Mercer held a 20-7 edge in shots and a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
On Tuesday, Agard and McMullen were named SoCon offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively. This marks the second consecutive week the two have earned player of the week laurels.
