Gandonou, Masuda Claim Doubles Title At Southern Intercollegiates

ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Amen Prince Gandonou and freshman Shingo Masuda had quite the debut for the Mercer men's tennis team over the weekend as the newcomer duo teamed up to knife through the doubles Black Tournament at the Georgia-hosted Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

Gandonou and Masuda opened their MU careers with a 6-3 victory over Georgia's Filipe Costa and Cyrus Mahjoob in Friday's quarterfinal round, before punching their tickets to Sunday's championship with a 6-2 triumph over Clemson's Max Damm and Stewart Aronson. The tandem completed their title run by easing past Arizona State's Mikel Anderson and Tanner Povey, 6-2.

Masuda and senior Marceau Fouilhosux both picked up singles victories over the course of the weekend as well. Masuda took down Georgia Tech's Owen Demuth in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) on Friday, while Fouilhoux bested Arizona State's Finn Willwerth, 6-4 and 6-4, on opening-day action as well.

The Bears will get a week's hiatus from competition before resuming the fall portion of their 2024-25 slate, Sept. 25-27, at the Samford Invitational. The three-day hidden duals event is scheduled to take place at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavillion.
