MACON – The Mercer men's and women's tennis teams will make their only home appearance of the fall this weekend as the Bears suit up to host the Mercer Gridiron Classic at either of two off-campus sites.
Â
The men's portion of the 3-day event will take place at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in north Macon, while the women's tournament will be held at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center in south Macon. Admission to both sites is free. The tournament features more than 200 entries from 19 different universities.
Â
Doubles action will get underway at 8:30 a.m. at both sites on Friday, while singles play for the women's tournament in south Macon is slated to start at 11:30 a.m. The singles portion of the men's tournament in north Macon is scheduled to commence at noon.
Â
Friday's opening-day action will mark the first of the 2025-26 campaign for the Mercer women. The Bears will play the first of four scheduled fall dates this weekend before heading to Statesboro next weekend for the Georgia Southern Fall Shootout. MU returns five student-athletes from last year's squad, including sophomore Jelena Gojkovic who registered a team-best 12 singles wins in 2024-25.
Â
The Mercer men will roll into the weekend fresh from a noteworthy showing at the UNF Invitational last weekend in Jacksonville, Fla. The Bears finished the three-day event at the UNF Tennis Complex with five singles victories and as many wins on the doubles courts against competitors from Tennessee, Texas Tech, North Florida and Barry. Shingo Masuda and Alex Aldaz both posted a 2-1 clip amid singles play on the weekend, including Masuda's victory over Tennessee's Jan Kobierski amid Friday's hidden duals action.
