MACON – The Mercer tennis program will continue its stand against some of the southeast region's top student-athletes this weekend when four Bears trek to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the UTC Steve Baras Invite.
Â
Seniors Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and Nemanja Stefanovic will represent Mercer's men's team at the event, while senior Marina de Diego Quinones and Jelena Gojkovic will proudly display the Orange & Black in the women's competition at the Champions Club.
Â
The three-day event will serve as a qualifier rung for the ITA Conference Masters Championships which will take place November 6-9 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. Four singles players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists) and three doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Conference Masters (champion, finalist, third place).
Â
The tournament is scheduled to get underway early Friday morning when Padio/Stefanovic take on The Citadel's duo of Noah Van Dyke and Brady Grober in the SoCon doubles draw at 9 a.m. Padio will go head-to-head with Wofford's Daniel Clivio in his singles opener at 10:30 a.m., while Stefanovic is simultaneously scheduled to face Chattanooga's Martin Delnido.
Â
Likewise, de Diego Quinones/Goljkovic will battle Western Carolina's Jenelle Roberts and Keira Stewart in their doubles opener at 9 a.m., and then break for singles matchups at 10:30 a.m. Gojkovic will go toe-to-toe with Roberts in the opening round of the SoCon singles draw, while de Diego Quinones is scheduled for a bout with East Tennessee State's Alessandra Caceres.
Â
Padio heads into the weekend sporting an impressive 7-2 mark in singles play across three fall events, while de Diego Quinones is 5-2 across her fall singles competition. Gojkovic has split a quartet of fall singles matchups, while Stefanovic carries a lone singles victory over Samford's Sandeep Mohandoss.
Â
Padio and Stefanovic have teamed up to post a 4-2 mark in doubles action during the fall. Gojkovic and de Diego Quinones will team up for just the second time in two seasons on the doubles courts this weekend. The tandem previously combined their skills in a dual against Georgia Tech last season.
