
Okojie's 29 Points Powers Bears To 91-84 Win At Elon

Mercer has won five of its last six games
ELON, NC – Baraka Okojie poured in a career high 29 points to go with 10 assists to lead the Mercer Bears to a 91-84 win over Elon Saturday evening from the Schar Center in Elon, North Carolina.
The Bears have now won three straight games and five of their last six as they improve their record to 5-2.

Mercer trailed by four at halftime, but outscored Elon, 49-38 in the second half. Mercer shot 28-of-60 (46.7%) from the field and 12-for-30 (40.0%) from three-point range. The Bears have made at least nine three-pointers in all five wins this season. Elon shot 28-of-67 (41.8%) from the field and 9-for-26 (34.6%) from deep.
Despite Elon controlling the glass, as they outrebounded the Bears 48-31, Mercer made up for it by winning the turnover battle as Elon had twice as many turnovers as the Bears with 18 to Mercer's nine.
Okojie's recorded his double-double of the season. He scored most of his points from the free throw line where he went 18-for-20 (90.0%). Armani Might also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. All five Mercer starters scored in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
A layup from Okojie gave Mercer an early 9-6 lead just minutes into the game. Elon would then go on a quick 10-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. A three-pointer from Kyle Cuffe Jr. cut the Phoenix lead to 21-18. Both teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the half as neither team could gain much separation on the scoreboard.
Brady Shoulders brought Mercer within two points at 30-28 with just under six minutes to play in the first half. Zaire Williams made a three-pointer from the wing to tie the game at 35. With time winding down in the first half, Shoulders drained a corner three to beat the halftime buzzer as the Bears went into the locker room trailing 46-42.
2ND HALF
Mercer quickly took its first lead since the early stages of the first half less than three minutes into the second half as Quinton Perkins II made a three-pointer to give Mercer a 51-48 lead. Elon retook the lead after making a three-pointer to take a 58-57 lead with 14 minutes to play.
A Williams three-pointer extender Mercer's lead to eight at 73-65 with just over seven minutes to play. A jumper by Okojie made it 77-69 with just under four minutes to play.
Mercer would then take an 11-point lead after a pair of free throws from Okojie with 1:53 to play. Elon got within five points at 89-84 with 33 seconds to play. However, the Bears made two more free throws and got one final stop on the defensive end to earn the 91-84 win.
