BOCA RATON, Fla. – A torrid run through the first two days of The Battle of Boca tournament in southeast Florida has landed Mercer senior Hod'Abalo Isak Padio in the final round-robin stage of the premier event.
Â
The Battle of Boca is a trademark of the Rick Macci Tennis Center and has received worldwide acknowledgement and praise for growing the game of tennis with a world class flair. Whittled down from an initial draw of 64 players with a UTR rating of 3.0 or better, this year's edition of the tournament is slated to conclude on Friday.
Â
Padio opened his portion of tournament play by yielding just one game on the way to a straight-sets win over BYU junior Tygen Goldammer, a former No. 1 recruit in the state of Florida who has already logged 17 victories for the Cougars as a collegian. Padio made it count again in the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over former Charleston student-athlete and current Lynn standout Louay Makke.
Â
The momentum train continued into Thursday for Padio who knocked off Ohio State senior Alexandre Bernard by toughing out a pair of 7-6 sets. An International Tennis Association All-American in 2023, Bernard has been ranked as high as No. 586 on the ATP Tour and is ranked No. 9 in the world (No. 3 in USA) in the ITF rankings. He starred as the No. 2 singles player for the Buckeyes last season.
