ATLANTA – Newcomer Shingo Masuda rebounded from an opening-set loss to Brian Capalnean to win a three-set thriller, but Georgia State captured the early doubles point, as well as a trio of singles matches in straight sets, to top visiting Mercer, 5-2, on Saturday at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center.
It was just the second loss in the last four outings for the Bears (2-4) who will open up a two-match home stand on Sunday when they take on North Florida at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Georgia State (3-5) improved to 8-0 all-time in the series with the Orange & Black, and have now won consecutive matches for the first time this season.
Brian Capalnean and Edward Tymes posted a 6-2 win over Masuda and Howell Burns on Court No. 3, and Gabriele Datei and Aryan Jit Singh toughed out a 7-5 victory over Amen Prince Gandonou and Hod'Abalo Isak Padio on Court No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for the hosts.
The Panthers picked up big singles wins on Court Nos. 3 and 1, respectively, to charge their team lead out to 3-1 before senior Marceau Fouilhoux put the finishing touches on a three-set victory on Court No. 4 to give the visitors their first team point of the afternoon.
A 6-2, 7-5 win by Edward Tymes over Padio at No. 2 singles moments later clinched the win for Georgia State.
The Bears and Ospreys (2-10) will get underway at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Admission to all 2025 Mercer home tennis matches is free.
