Mercer Battles Back To Defeat Troy, 4-3

MACON, Ga. - Jelena Gojkovic clinched the deciding match for Mercer who won its first match of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Troy, 4-3 from LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The morning got started with doubles matches where Troy's Leena Metwally and Hagar Ramadan-Amin defeated Ines Hömberg and Marina de Diego Quinones, 6-2. The Trojans won the doubles point after Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis defeated Mercer's Tea Zivic and Emilia Cosatto, 6-2.
The last doubles match on court two went unfinished between Mercer's Dzhastina Mikhnova and Marie Bannmeyer and Troy's Veena Nazar and Emilia Namyslo. The match was called with Mikhnova and Bannmeyer leading 5-2.
In singles matches, Troy's Veena Nazar won 6-3, 6-1 over Marie Bannmeyer. On court five Valeriia Avdeeva defeated Tea Zivic, 6-4, 6-1 to give Troy a 3-0 lead, needing to win just one of the final four singles matches.
However, the Bears fought back, beginning on court one where Emilia Cosatto battled to win the tiebreaker, 7-6 in the first set before winning the second set in dominating fashion 6-1 over Troy's Gabrielle Leslie.
Mercer's Dzhastina Mikhnova defeated Troy's Leena Metwally, 6-3, 4-6,6-1 on court three to keep Mercer alive. Marina de Diego Quinones battled to earn a three set win over Troy's Marina Guirguis 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to tie the match at three.
The deciding match came on court six between Mercer's Jelena Gojkovic and Troy's Hagar Ramadan-Amin. Gojkovic won the first set 6-4, but then dropped the second 7-5. She came up with a 6-3 win in set three to give the Bears the come from behind 4-3 win.
Mercer has a quick turnaround as the Bears head to Florida State to play the Seminoles tomorrow, Feb. 9. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
