MACON – Two-time defending Big South champion Gardner-Webb won a pair of tight matchups to clinch the coveted doubles point, and then captured three-straight singles matches in straight sets to fuel a 6-1 victory over home-standing Mercer on Sunday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
Â
The setback added a sour end to the weekend for the Bears (1-3) who notched the win column for the first time this season with a 5-2 rout of visiting College of Charleston. It was the sixth-straight win for the Runnin' Bulldogs (6-1) who improved to 4-1 in road matches this season with the decision as well.
Â
Junior Nemanja Stefanovic registered a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Eduardo Dias at No. 1 singles to grab the only point of the day for the Orange & Black who nearly grabbed points on singles court Nos. 2 and 6 as well. Hod'Abalo Isak Padio did not register a game in his opening set with Numa Lemieux-Monette at No. 2 singles, toughed out a 7-5 win in the second set and fell 10-5 in the tie-breaking third set.
Â
Newcomer Shingo Masuda toughed out a 7-5 win in his opening set with Boyd Schreiber at No. 6 singles, but fell 6-1 in the second set and 10-2 in the superset.
Â
Mercer actually drew first blood in doubles action as Padio/Gandonou recorded a 6-4 victory over Numa Lemieux-Monette / Kaua Cresoni, but the visitors posted 6-4 wins in each of the other two matchups to grab the early 1-0 lead on the team scoreboard.
Â
The Bears will be back in action again on Wednesday when they trek to the Heart of Dixie to take on Troy (7-4) at 3 p.m. ET. That contest will mark the first of three-straight matches away from home for MU.
