Väistö In First As Mercer Sits Atop Leaderboard After First Round In Hawaii

Emilia Väistö carded a 4-under, 68 and is tied for first place
MAUI, HAWAII - Emilia Väistö carded an excellent first round of 4-under, 68 and sits in a tie for first place with Mercer as a team in first place after a strong first round for the Bears on Monday at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational from Royal Kā'anapali Golf Course in Maui, Hawaii.
As a team, the Bears finished the day, with a first round of 6-under, 282 which is the lowest round of the season for the Bears. Mercer holds a one shot lead over No. 49 Oregon State in the 17-team field.
Väistö's bogey-free round of 68 is her lowest of the season. She is tied for first place with four other golfers in the 98-player field. Väistö was excellent on the par 4's as she went 3-under on them which was tied for the best score on the day.
Väistö was one of four Mercer golfers to shoot under par on Monday, including Ella Mäki-Tanila who is playing as an individual and carded a round of 1-under, 71.
Mikayla Dubnik also had a bogey-free round and finished with a 3-under, 69 and is one shot back of the leaders and tied for sixth place. Katie Scheck carded a round of 1-under, 71 and is tied for 16th place.
As a team Mercer had the fewest bogeys in the 17-team field with just 11, three fewer than the next closest team, Gonzaga. Mercer finished the day with 15 birdies which was the third most in the field. The Bears - along with BYU - are the only two teams to not play the par 3's over par on Monday as each finished even par on them as a team.
The second round begins Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. local (2 p.m. ET) via a shotgun start.
