Fourth-Quarter Surge Pushes Mercer Past Queens

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team took down Queens in a close 12-11 game this morning for the conference opener at Five Star Stadium.

The Bears trailed throughout the first half but found some firepower coming out at halftime to come back from a two-point deficit to defeat the Royals. The Bears were led by junior attackman Mikey Frederick who posted four goals and two assists, including a first-half hat trick. Sophomore Dillon Bush recorded a hat trick of his own with three goals and an assist. The remaining goals came from Quinn Kelley, Jackson Hirschy, Luke Fox and Jack Sullivan. Thomas Venzie held it down on defense for the Bears with four groundballs and Kelley caused two turnovers. Between the pipes, Rand Paddack tallied 16 saves against the Royals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first goal of the game was scored by Frederick just two minutes into play, giving the Bears their first lead of the game. The Royals wasted no time, responding with their first goal of the game at the 12:25 mark. The Royals scored three more goals in the third quarter while Frederick added another one to shorten Queen's lead to 4-2 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was quiet for both squads each scoring two goals before heading into halftime. The Mercer goals were scored by Hirschy and Frederick, his third of the game.
Mercer began to grab the momentum in the third quarter after an electric goal from Kelley at the 13:41 mark to put the Bears within one of the Royals. The Bears then scored back-to-back goals from Fox and Bush to put the Orange & Black up 7-6. Queens came back with two goals before the buzzer to take back the lead 8-7 to end the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a battle between these two squads with eight total goals scored between both teams. The first five minutes were scoreless until Bush found the back of the net at the 9:15 mark and was shortly followed up by another Queens goal. Both teams exchanged goals back and forth until Sullivan tied the game 11-11 at the 3:39 mark. With 0:27 on the clock Luke Hand found Bush who hit the game-winning goal to push Mercer towards their second win of the season.

Frederick's four goals and two assists is a season-high for the junior.
Bush recorded his fourth hat trick of the season.
Venzie picked up multiple groundballs for the fifth game in a row, leading the Bears defense.

NOTABLES

Bush keeps his scoring streak alive, scoring at least one goal in all ten contests this season.
The Bears currently sit at 1-0 in the ASUN.

The Bears will hit the road again on Saturday, April 5 as they head to Salt Lake City, Utah to face the Utes in another conference matchup at noon.
