Abby Morrison scored a hat trick in the loss
TEMPE, Ariz. - Abby Morrison scored a hat trick, but the Mercer women's lacrosse team fell on the road to Arizona State, 16-10 Tuesday evening in Tempe, Arizona.
Arizona State took an early 4-0 lead, but Mercer battled back to get within two as the Sun Devils led 7-5. Arizona State was then able to find a way to earn the 16-10 win. Arizona State outshot Mercer, 37-29 and had a 26-22 shots on goal advantage in the game.
Draw controls were 16-12, Arizona State. Turnovers hurt the Bears in the game as Mercer had 17 turnovers to 15 for the Sun Devils.Â
Four different players scored at least two goals for Mercer, led by Morrison's three goals. Sami Lowinger, Caroline Glus, and Sofia D'Angelo all had two goals.
Defensively, Mercer had five caused turnovers, with Sarah Leahy and goalie Mackenzie Ward each with two caused turnovers.
Kayla Casey got the start in goal for the Bears. She played most of the first half and allowed nine goals while making five saves, before the Bears turned to redshirt freshman Mackenzie Ward who played the rest of the game for the Bears and played well in goal for Mercer as she made five saves while allowing seven goals. She finished with a 41.7 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Arizona State started fast by scoring the first four goals of the game. Sami Lowinger scored on a shot from distance to get the Bears on the board. The Sun Devils would take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
After Arizona State scored the first two goals of the second quarter, to take a 6-1 lead, Mercer then scored four of the next five goals to cut the deficit to two at 7-5. Morrison scored the fourth goal of the short scoring run for the Bears on a fastbreak assist from Abby Soltys. Arizona State scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to take a 9-5 lead at halftime.Â
A goal from Caroline Glus made it an 11-7 game as Arizona State still led. The Sun Devils shored things up defensively and scored the next four goals of the game to take a 15-7 lead with under 10 minutes to play.
Morrison scored two of her three goals in the final six minutes of the game, but the Bears dropped a 16-10 contest to the Sun Devils.

Mercer will stay out in Arizona and play UC Davis on Friday, March 7 at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be played in Tempe, Arizona on the campus of Arizona State.
