
Mercer Defeats Samford, 5-2 On Senior Day

MACON, Ga. -Â Mercer came out on top on Senior Day by defeating Samford, 5-2 Thursday afternoon from the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
Mercer recognized its three seniors before the match in Emilia Cosatto, Kennedi Jones and Dzhastina Mikhnova. The Bears won the doubles point and the first three singles matches to clinch the match while up 4-0.
In doubles action, Samford's Sara Erenda and Emily Surcey won the first match by defeating Emilia Cosatto and Tea Zivic, 6-3. On court three, Marie Bannmeyer and Dzhastina Mikhnova were able to defeat Eleni Liakonis and Meredith Taylor, 6-4. Bannmeyer and Mikhnova's win was the first doubles loss in SoCon play for Samford's Liakonis and Taylor who were 5-0 in the conference and 15-3 overall entering the day paired together.Â
The doubles point then came down to Marina de Diego Quinones and Ines Hömberg who went to a tiebreaker against Samford's Margaret Jaraczewski and Hailey Troup. In the end, de Diego Quinones and Hömberg were able to fight to win the doubles point for the Bears with a 7-6 (5) win.
In singles matches, Marina de Diego Quinones defeated Samford's Emily Surcey, 6-2, 6-1. On court three, Tea Zivic battled to win the first set 7-5 over Samford's Eleni Liakonis and then won the second set 6-2 to give Mercer a 3-0 lead.
Jelena Gojkovic clinched the match for the Bears on court six with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Libby Blair of Samford. Then, after not winning a game in the first set, Emilia Cosatto bounced back with and impressive second and third set to defeat Samford's Margaret Jaraczewski, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Samford was able to win the last two matches, both of which went three sets. Samford's Meredith Taylor defeated Mikhnova, 6-3, 4-7, 1-0 (9). The last match to finish was on court five where Samford's Sara Erenda defeated Bannmeyer, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Next up for the Bears is the SoCon Tournament set for April 17-19 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mercer will be the No. 5 seed and play the No. 4 seed in either Western Carolina or Wofford.
