Mercer Takes Down High Point, 16-13

Bears hand Panthers first Big South loss
MACON, Ga. - Caroline Glus and Sofia D'Angelo combined to score 10 of Mercer's 16 goals as the Bears defeated High Point, 16-13 Saturday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
With the win, the Bears move to 5-0 in the Big South while handing the Panthers their first conference loss of the season at 5-1.
Mercer took control of the game with a great start to the third quarter, scoring five of the first six goals in the frame to take a 12-5 lead and rode out the lead until the final seconds.
Caroline Glus led Mercer with six goals which tied her career high set two games ago against Radford. She scored five consecutive goals for Mercer in a 10-minute span in the second quarter. Sofia D'Angelo scored four goals to go with one assist. Abby Morrison also had a hat trick to go with a team high seven draw controls.
Defensively, the Bears held their own, limiting the Panthers to 13 goals, nearly four goals below their season average of 16.9 goals per game. It was High Point's third fewest goals scored in a game this season.
The Bears had five caused turnovers with a different player causing each one. Shots in the game were 35-27, Mercer and shots on goal were 22-18, Mercer. Neither team had a decisive advantage in the draw circle as draw controls were 17-16, Mercer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
High Point took an early 3-1 lead just over five minutes into the game. Morrison scored her first goal of the game with under five minutes to go in the quarter and Mercer trailed 3-2 after the first quarter.
Glus scored four goals in under six minutes to start the second quarter to help give Mercer its first lead of the game at 6-3. After High Point's Shannon Smith got one back to make it 6-4, Glus scored shortly after and Mercer led 7-4 going into halftime.
Arguably the biggest period of the game was the first 10 minutes of the third quarter in which Mercer outscored High Point, 5-1 to take its largest lead of the game at 12-5. The Panthers scored twice in the final three minutes of the quarter but still trailed, 12-7.
A 3-1 run in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter brought High Point within three at 13-10. However, Mercer responded with three straight goals from D'Angelo, Morrison, and Glus to go back up 16-10 and the Bears would go on to win, 16-13.
NOTABLES
Mercer's next game is in one week when the Bears travel to Rock Hill, South Carolina to take on Winthrop on Saturday, April 19. First draw is set for noon.
