
Great First Half Propels Mercer Past Wofford 15-9 In Big South Tournament Semifinals

Bears advance to Big South Tournament Championship game for fourth straight year
MACON, Ga. - Sofia D'Angelo scored four goals to go with one assists and Mercer played a great first half on its way to a commanding 15-9 win over Wofford in the Big South Tournament semfinals, Friday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
With the win, Mercer advances to its fourth straight Big South Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon against the No. 2 seed, High Point Panthers.
Mercer led 12-2 at halftime and held Wofford's leading goal scorer and Big South Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Bria Foley to just two points on the day.
It wasn't a perfect game by any means for the Bears who had a season high 23 turnovers and went just 12-20 on clears. The Bears did dominate the draw circle with a 20-7 draw advantage. Mercer's 25 shots were its third fewest in any game this season and shots on goal were 18-16, Bears.
In addition to D'Angelo's four goals, Caroline Glus and Abby Morrison each scored three goals. Defensively, Abby Soltys led Mercer with two caused turnovers as the Bears had eight caused turnovers as a team. Kayla Casey made 10 saves in goal with a .526 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer scored three goals in the first five minutes with Sami Lowinger scoring both of her goals during the span as Mercer led, 3-0. Morrison scored two of her three goals in the final two minutes of the quarter and Mercer led, 7-2 after the first quarter.
D'Angelo scored the first three goals of the second quarter to extend Mercer's lead to 10-2. Gabby Brisbin and Morrison each scored to close out a strong first half for the Bears who took a 12-2 lead into halftime.
Glus scored twice in just over two minutes to begin the second half, but Wofford responded with three unanswered goals and Mercer led 14-5 after the third quarter.
Mercer only had one shot on goal in the fourth quarter, D'Angelo's fourth goal of the game and Wofford outscored the Bears, 4-1 in the final quarter, but Mercer's halftime lead was to big to overcome for the Terriers as Mercer won, 15-9.Â
