Men’s Soccer Heads To Wilmington For Road Match

MACON – The Mercer Bears (2-5-2) begins a trip to Wilmington, North Carolina for a contest with the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Seahawks (2-3-2, 2-1-0 CAA) at UNCW Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Update on the Bears

Mercer enters this match looking to flip the script and break a three-match skid. All three contests have been tight battles against tough opponents, including then No. 24 Denver and North Florida.

Junior Casillas continues to lead the way for the Bears' attack with eight total points. The graduate senior transfer has two goals and four assists in his young Mercer career.

Henry Hampshaw has been nothing short of sensational to begin his tenure in Macon. The sophomore from William Carey has 33 saves through his first nine matches at the Division I level and is tied for 18th in the nation for total saves this year.

Gavin Morgan has been the anchor of Mercer's back line. The six-year veteran has played every second this season for the Bears, orchestrating two shutouts already this year.

Scouting the Seahawks

UNCW enters this match with a 2-1-1 record in its last four matches. Headlining the Seahawks' recent stretch is their 3-3 draw on the road to then ranked No. 1 Wake Forest.

Goalkeeper Trey Smiley faced 18 shots, saving five, to allow UNCW to make a late comeback to split the result with the highest ranked team in the nation at the time. Bryan Miralrio and Christian Acevedo came off the bench and scored within the final 20 minutes of the contest to earn the draw with the Demon Deacons.

Osei Gyamfi leads UNCW in his sophomore season with three goals and eight total points with Miralrio trailing behind with two goals and seven points respectively. Smiley has started in all but one match for the Seahawks this year and has 25 saves.

Head coach Aidan Heaney is in his 25th as UNCW's gaffer. Heaney is a five-time Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year and has led the Seahawks to over 200 wins during his tenure.
