
Bears Kick Off Weekend Trip To Virginia At VMI

MACON, Ga. - The Mercer men's lacrosse team will trek to Lexington, Va. to open up their first road trip of the 2026 season against the Keydets of VMI on Saturday, February 14 at 11 a.m.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's game will be the 13th meeting between the two programs, with the first matchup dating back to 2011 in Macon. Mercer holds the overall record over VMI 8-4 with both a home and away record of 4-2. The two squads faced off last season on February 15 at Five Star Stadium resulting in a Keydets 14-11 victory.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears are coming off of one of the biggest non-conference wins in program history against Marist University, defeating the Red Foxes 13-9 at FIve Star Stadium on Saturday, February 7. Six different players for Mercer found the back of the net in the victory.
Sophomore attackman Will Zylstra put up a game-high four goals and senior attackman Michael Frederick added a hat trick with two assists. Nick Church and James Davidson both recorded the first goal of their careers and the remaining goals were scored by Jack Sullivan, Dillon Bush and Ben Jose. On the defensive side of the field, Quinn Kelley picked up four groundballs and caused a turnover while freshman goalkeeper Jacob Neuman posted 13 saves on the day.
SCOUTING VMIÂ
The Keydets are led by Taylor Mendoza who enters his first season at the helm for VMI. The Keydets finished the 2025 season with an overall record of 10-4 and an NEC record of 4-3. VMI's 2026 season opener against St. Bonaventure on Sunday, February 1 was postponed so the Keydets opened their season against High Point on Saturday, February 7 resulting in a 11-19 loss for VMI.
Junior attackman Dayton Bagwell led the Keydets with four goals and an assist in the opener while junior midfielder Jack Duncan-Bloom put up two goals and assist. Three defenders for VMI caused two turnovers a piece and goalkeeper Adam Norris recorded seven saves against High Point.
