
Mercer Controls Second Half In 70-54 Win Over The Citadel

Mercer outscored The Citadel, 52-29 in the second half
CHARLESTON, S.C. – After trailing by seven at halftime, Mercer outscored The Citadel, 52-29 in the second half to run away with a 70-54 win over The Citadel Saturday afternoon from McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina.
It was a tale of two halves for the Bears who had one of their worst offensive halves of the season in the first half, scoring a season low 18 points. It was a different story in the second half for the Bears who exploded for 52 second half points on 19-for-25 shooting (76.0%) and went 9-for-11 (81.8%) from three-point range in the half.
Mercer played well defensively for most of the game. The 54 points allowed by the Bears was the fewest allowed against a conference opponent all season.
Points in the paint were 30-16, Bears. Mercer also edged The Citadel in rebounding, 32-30.
Okojie led all scorers with 22 points to go with six assists and five rebounds. Armani Mighty registered his 13th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a career high four assists. Quinton Perkins II and Connor Serven were great off the bench for the Bears. Perkins finished with 13 points, on 5-of-9 shooting. Serven added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Both teams struggled offensively while playing sound defense as the score was just 6-2, The Citadel more than seven minutes into the game. A layup from Mighty made it a 13-8 game with the Bulldogs still in front.
Serven hit a pair of free throws in the final minute of the half and Mercer trailed 25-18 at halftime.
2ND HALF
Okojie and Kyle Cuffe Jr. each made a three-pointer in the first minute of the game and suddenly the Bears had made it a one-possession game at 27-24. Mercer trailed 37-32, before going on a quick 8-0 run to take a 40-37 lead as Okojie hit a pair of threes and Serven scored on a layup and Mercer had its first lead of the game since it was 2-0.
The Citadel retook the lead at 44-42 with over 10 minutes to play. Then, Mercer would go on a 14-0 run to take a 56-44 lead. Mercer held the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly a five minute stretch of game time. Quinton Perkins connected on his third three-pointer of the game that put the Bears up for good at 63-47 with 3:49 to play. Mercer would go on to close out the game and earn a 70-54 road win.
