FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Marina De Diego Quinones used a 7-6 tiebreaker in the second set to finish off a straight-sets victory over Nora Svensson in the featured singles matchup, but Florida Gulf Coast captured the rest of the afternoon on the way to a 6-1 win over the visiting Bears on Friday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Â
The setback snapped a four-match win streak for Mercer (6-3) who opened up a three-match stretch away from home with Friday's outing as well. It was the fifth win in the last six matches for the Eagles (7-2) who improved to 6-0 at home with Friday's decision as well.
Â
Despite a dominant win by De Diego Quinones and Ines Hömberg Fernandez in the featured matchup, Florida Gulf Coast used wins on Court Nos. 2 and 3 to capture the early double point, including a 6-2 win by Cecilie Maeland/Ashley Matz at No. 3 doubles.
Â
The Eagles won four-straight singles matchups in straight sets to clinch the team victory, with Matz rebounding from an opening-set loss with a 6-2 win in the second set and a 10-3 victory in the deciding superset on Court No. 5. De Diego Quinones spoiled the shutout, however, with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Svensson to close out the afternoon.
Â
The Bears will continue their three-match stretch away from Macon on Saturday morning when they return to the FGCU Tennis Complex for a neutral site tilt with Arkansas State (3-3). First serves are scheduled for 10 a.m.
