Mercer Battles Visiting Western Carolina On Saturday

MACON – The Mercer women's basketball team will close out a short two-game home stand on Saturday when the Bears bunker down to lock horns with Southern Conference rival Western Carolina in Hawkins Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Fans unable to make the trip to Macon can still follow the action for free via a live statistics link provided by the MU athletics department. The game is also scheduled to be broadcasted live on ESPN+ with Billy Andrews and Bill Connelly calling the action.

LAST TIME OUT
Mercer shot 17-for-21 from the free throw line and forced 13 turnovers in the second half alone as the home-standing Bears snapped a three-game skid with a 67-58 victory over Southern Conference nemesis UNC Greensboro on Thursday evening in Hawkins Arena. Nahawa Diarra matched a team-high with 14 points, while also adding six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists to lead the Bears who also registered a dozen steals and posted a 33-29 win in the rebounding column as well.

ABOUT MERCER
The Bears (13-9, 3-4 SoCon) snapped a three-game skid with the victory over UNC Greensboro on Thursday evening, while also improving their home record out to 7-3. Mercer, who has registered a Southern Conference-best 14.63 made free throws per game in 2025-26, has shot 79.7 percent (126-for-158) from the charity stripe over its last seven outings, including a 16-for-17 clip against Wofford last week. Senior Nahawa Diarra, who tops the scoring column for MU (11.5) ppg), has averaged 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals over her last three starts.

SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA
The Catamounts (3-19, 0-8 SoCon) have now dropped eight-straight games after Thursday evening's 73-50 setback at Samford that also dropped the Catamounts to 0-11 away from home this season. Western Carolina has mustered just 52.0 points per game in opponent arenas, and are -15.9 in the scoring column in their previous nine road outings and have been held to 54 or fewer points six times over that span. WCU has committed 20.5 turnovers per game in road games this season as well. Sophomores Ally Hollifield (11.7 ppg) and Taj Hunter (11.0) carry the torch for the 'Cats, offensively, with Hollifield also chipping in a team-best 5.5 rebounds per game.

MERCER/UNC GREENSBORO SERIES
Mercer leads the 31-year-old series, 31-1, and will ride a 14-game series win streak into Saturday's contest in Hawkins Arena. Visiting Mercer scored 31 points off of 23 Western Carolina turnovers, went 30-for-38 from the free throw line and used a 19-6 run in the third quarter to fuel an 84-75 win over the Catamounts on January 8. The Orange & Black is 13-0 all-time against the 'Cats in Macon.

ON DECK
The Bears will open up a four-game road trip on Tuesday when they trek to Johnson City, Tenn., to take on East Tennessee State (11-11, 4-3 SoCon) inside Brooks Gymnasium. Start time is slated for 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for February 1, but was postponed due to winter storm that sliced its way through Tennessee and Virginia.
