MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team picked up one of its best non-conference wins in program history with a win over Marist University on Saturday morning at Five Star Stadium.

The Bears were led by sophomore attackman Will Zylstra who posted a game-high four goals while also adding three groundballs. Senior attackman Mikey Frederick totaled a hat trick with two assists and junior attackman Dillon Bush recorded two goals of his own with an assist. The remaining three goals were scored by Jack Sullivan and Ben Jose with Nick Church and James Davidson picking up the first goal of their careers. The Mercer defense was on lockdown the entire game with Quinn Kelley picking up three groundballs and Jack Callaghan causing three turnovers. Between the pipes for the Bears, freshman Jacob Neuman recorded 13 saves in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams came out of the gate hot with seven total goals scored between both sides in the first quarter. Marist started the scoring with a goal just over a minute into play but Frederick and Zylstra quickly responded with goals of their own just 30 and 20 seconds after the Marist goal. The Red Foxes were able to find the back of the net again but it was followed by three Mercer goals, giving the Bears a three-point lead heading into the second quarter.
The scoring frenzy continued as both teams combined for six goals in the second quarter. Once again, Marist opened up scoring with two goals just a few minutes in but the Bears responded with four goals, including Church's first career goal. The Bears then entered halftime after Bush found the back of the net for the second time at the 1:17 mark.
Neither side was letting up in the third quarter with a combined seven goals from each team in the 15 minutes. Sullivan kicked it off with his first goal of the season assisted by Frederick but Marist was able to answer it with back-to-back goals putting the score at 9-7 to come within two scores of the Bears. Mercer was able to find the net three more times before the end of the quarter, including Davidson's first career goal.
Scoring came to a halt in the fourth quarter as Mercer's defense went on lockdown mode to hold the Red Foxes to one goal in the final 15 minutes, paving the way to one of the biggest non-conference wins in program history.

The Bears will head up to Virginia for their first road trip of the season starting off with a game against VMI in Lexington on Saturday, Feb. 14 at noon and will close it out at Richmond on Monday. February. 16 at 11 a.m.
