
Mercer Defeats North Georgia, 5-2

MACON, Ga - The Mercer women's tennis team defeated North Georgia, 5-2 Sunday afternoon from the Copelan Tennis Complex.
The Bears improve to 2-2 overall early in the season after the win over North Georgia which is ranked No. 3 in the country in NCAA Division II.
Mercer won the doubles point to start out the day. On court one, Marina de Diego Quinones and Ines Hömberg defeated North Georgia's Anastasiia Opolska and Olesya Stokusova, 6-2. Sofiya Tsitavets and Tea Zivic clinched the doubles point for the bears with a 6-2 win over Linn Goerdes and Louise Rey of North Georgia.
In singles play, Ines Hömberg got things started for the Bears with a great showing on court five where she dropped just one game and defeated North Georgia's Emily Bush, 6-0, 6-1. Tea Zivic also played very well in her singles match against North Georgia's Sofia Giraldo. Zivic earned a 6-1, 6-1 win to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.
North Georgia won the next two matches to make the score 3-2, Mercer. North Georgia's Anastasiia Opolska defeated Marina de Diego Quinones , 6-2, 7-6 (8). On court three North Georgia's Olesya Stokusova also won a second set tiebreaker in a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win over Sofiya Tsitavets.
Court four was a close match between Marie Bannmeyer and Linn Goerdes, but ultimately Bannmeyer came out on top with a 7-6, 7-5 win to clinch the match for the Bears. The last match to finish was on court six where Jelena Gojkovic rallied after dropping the first set to defeat North Georgia's Victoria Niox Chateu in the only singles match to go three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Up next for the Bears is a home match on Saturday, Feb. 14 against Appalachian State. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
