Zivic Clinches Match For Bears In 4-3 Win Over App State

MACON, Ga. - With the match tied, 3-3, Mercer's Tea Zivic came through for the Bears and won the decisive match in three sets as Mercer earned a big 4-3 win over Appalachian State Saturday afternoon from the Copelan Tennis Complex.

"Today was a great win for the girls," said Mercer assistant coach Lily Woods. "We have made some real progress as a group and it's starting to show. I'm proud of the energy we had as a team and the fight we showed in big moments."

Mercer won the doubles point to start out the day, winning the first two of three matches. Marie Bannmeyer and Antonia Schweigel were excellent together on court three, winning by resounding fashion, 6-0 over App State's Allegra Hobson and Ruby Broadbent. Tea Zivic and Sofiya Tsitavets clinched the doubles point for the Bears by earning a 6-2 win over
Sreenidhi Balaji and Naledi Manyube of App State. The last doubles match went to App State's Savannah Mascoll and Taya Powell who edged Mercer's Marina de Diego Quinones and Ines Hömberg, 6-4.

In singles play, App State's All-American, Savannah Mascoll defeated Marina de Diego Quinones, 6-4, 6-0. On court three, Sofiya Tsitavets defeated Taya Powell of App State, 6-1, 6-3.

Ines Hömberg gave the Bears a 3-1 lead after winning her match on court five over Ruby Broadbent of App State, 6-2, 6-2. The Mountaineers battled back, starting on court four that saw a tight match between Allegra Hobson of App State and Marie Bannmeyer. Hobson ended up earning a hard-fought, 7-6(2), 6-4 win. App State's Alexi Cleveland tied the match at three after winning in three sets over Jelena Gojkovic, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

That left the winner to be decided on court two where Tea Zivic and App State's Naledi Manyube were in a back-and-forth three set battle. In the third set, Zivic was able to secure the match point and win, 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4.

Up next for the Bears is another home match on Monday, Feb. 16 against ABAC over at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
