Bears Take Down The Red Storm In Non-Conference Finale

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team defeated St. John's in a thrilling 12-11 morning contest at Five Star Stadium on Saturday, March 14 in Mercer's nonconference finale.

Nine different Bears found the back of the net for Mercer with Michael Frederick, Jack Sullivan and Ganon Cope each recording two goals, respectively. Luke Fox posted three assists and a goal while the remaining goals came from Dillon Bush, Dylan McKelvy, Will Zylstra, Connor Corkill and Quinn Kelley with his first goal of the season. Seven different players for Mercer caused a turnover and Christopher Cappelmann went 13-25 at the faceoff x and scooped up five ground balls. Inbetween the pipes for the Bears, freshman goalkeeper Jacob Neuman registered 11 saves in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

St. John's struck first in the opening minute of play but the Bears responded with four-straight goals. Mercer's defense did not allow the Red Storm to score again until the 1:40 mark in the first quarter, heading into the second quarter with a 5-2 lead.
Kelley opened up scoring in the second quarter with a long-range goal and Will Zylstra found the back of the net at the 9:27 mark to add to Mercer's scoring. The Red Storm came within two goals at the 7-5 mark but back-to-back goals from Sullivan gave Mercer the 9-5 lead before the halftime buzzer.
St. John's started to find their groove in the third quarter scoring four goals compared to Mercer's two to come within two scores of the Bears before the final 15 minutes of play.
The Red Storm then scored early on in the fourth quarter to come within one score but a goal from Cope at the 4:38 mark gave the Bears a little bit of breathing room. Eventhough the Red Storm was able to squeeze in a goal with 57 seconds left on the clock, Mercer's defense shut down St. John's to pick up their fourth win of the season.

Fox posted a career-high three assists and led th offensive effort with four points.
Kelley scored his first goal of the season.
Frederick recorded his fifth game of the season with multiple goals scored.

Mercer improves to 4-4 on the season.
The Red Storm moves to 2-6 on the year.

UP NEXT

The Bears will have a bye weekend next weeked and will head to Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, March 28 to face Queens at Queens Sports Complex at 2 p.m. for the first ASUN matchup of the season.
