Macon, Ga. - The Mercer women's lacrosse team lost 16-8 to No. 9 Clemson, Tuesday evening from Five Star Stadium in Macon, Georgia.
A slow start for the Bears forced them to play catch up the rest of the game as Clemson led 6-0 after the first quarter and used that cushion to hold the Bears off the rest of the game.
Clemson outshot Mercer 35-14, and had 17 shots on goal to Mercer's eight. The Tigers were excellent in the draw circle and it was a big reason why Clemson got off to a fast start as the Tigers scored their first three goals of the game before Mercer ever had its first possession of the game. Draw Controls were 17-8, Clemson.
Both teams had more turnovers than they typically commit as Mercer had 21 turnovers and Clemson, 16.
Caroline Glus led Mercer offensively with three goals and two assists. Sofia D'Angelo was the only other Bear with multiple goals as she had two goals.Â
Ansley Walters had a good game in the midfield for the Bears, finishing with one goal, four caused turnovers and one ground ball. Mackenzie Ward made eight saves in goal for the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
As aforementioned, Mercer's slow start forced the Bears into an early deficit that would be tough to overcome against a top 10 team in the country. Clemson scored the first seven goals of the game for a 7-0 lead with more than 12 minutes to play in the second quarter.
Ansley Walters got Mercer on the board with under seven minutes remaining in the second quarter when she cut to the cage and received a nice pass from Reaghan Lomascola and Walters scored her 12th goal of the season.
After a pair of goals from Clemson, Glus raced past the Clemson defense towards the goal and scored to make it 9-2, Clemson. Josie Parrett scored on a long distance shot from a nice pass across the field from Glus before Clemson added an 11th goal from the 8-meter and Clemson took an 11-3 lead into halftime.
After Clemson scored less than one minute into the second half, Glus and D'Angelo scored about two minutes apart to make it, 12-5. Those pair of goals would be the only ones of the quarter for the Bears and Clemson led, 14-5 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, D'Angelo and Glus would score their second and third goals of the game respectively to make it a 14-7 game. Reaghan Lomascola scored her fifth goal of the season with two minutes to play and Clemson added one more goal following that to come away with a 16-8 win over the Bears.
