Gerald Fitch enters his third season with the Bears in 2021-22.
Fitch has helped the Bears go 35-26 in two seasons under head coach Greg Gary and advance to the Southern Conference title game for the first time since Mercer joined the conference prior to the 2014-15 season. In 2020-21, Mercer jumped out to a 6-0 start for the first time since the 1966-67 season and defeated Georgia Tech on the road in the second game of the season. Ross Cummings, who ended his career with 1,244 points (16th in program history) and 246 three-pointers (2nd in program history), and Neftali Alvarez made the All-SoCon team at the end of the regular season. The Bears made a run through the SoCon tournament as the No. 7 seed, topping No. 10 Samford, No. 2 Wofford and No. 6 VMI to reach the championship game and had three players - Alvarez, Leon Ayers III and Felipe Haase - make the all-tournament team.
Fitch was also part of Mercer’s 17-win squad in 2019-20. The 2019-20 team won six consecutive games from January 15 – February 1, 2020, and Mercer earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I Team of the Week honors on February 4. The Bears won 11 Southern Conference contests and locked up the No. 4 seed for the league tournament before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Three players – Djordje Dimitrijevic, Ethan Stair and Kamar Robertson – earned All-SoCon honors. Dimitrijevic was also honored by the NABC as a Second Team All-District XXI selection and a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Second Team Academic All-America, Mercer’s first honoree since 2006.
Fitch, a Macon native, played high school basketball at Westside High School. Following a standout career at Westside Fitch took his talents to Lexington, Ky., and played for the University of Kentucky.
The four-year letter winner and four-year starter appeared in 127 games for the Wildcats and scored 1,391 points over four years. His 1,391 points rank 24th best in scoring history. Fitch made 199 three-pointers for his career, which ranks fourth best in program history. Fitch ranks in the top-three of rebounding guards in Kentucky history.
During his senior season, Fitch led the Wildcats in scoring as he averaged 16.2 points per game, where he made 79 three-pointers the 12th best mark in a single season history.
Following his time at Kentucky, Fitch played in the NBA from 2005-06. He assisted the Miami Heat on their journey in winning the NBA championship before being traded to finish the season with the Houston Rockets.
Fitch played professional basketball from 2005-19 with 21 teams in 21 countries.
Off the court, he is a motivational speaker speaking engagements at various churches, high schools, middle schools and non-profit organizations throughout different countries pertaining to the importance of discipline in being a student-athlete and overcoming obstacles.
Fitch has also spent time working with K.O.K.O.S., a non-profit organization with an acronym which stands for Keeping Our Kids Off The Streets. The organization’s mission is mentoring and developing young children in need.
Fitch graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree.
