Matt Brownback was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services in the spring of 2019. He serves as the primary advisor for Men’s Basketball, Baseball and Football (Defense).

Under his leadership, Mercer won the Southern Conference’s Barrett-Bonner Award – given annually to the school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league’s academic roll – in three consecutive years (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18). The Bears have also paced the SoCon in honor roll selections for four straight years (2014-18) under Brownback’s tenure.

Brownback has been at Mercer University since 2013, originally serving as a graduate assistant coach for the men’s basketball program under Bob Hoffman. He was an integral part of Mercer’s 2013 ASUN Conference tournament title and historic run to the NCAA Tournament, which included an upset win over Duke in the second round in Raleigh, N.C.

After earning his Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership from Mercer, Brownback was hired as an Academic Coordinator of Student-Athletes in 2015 and was later promoted to Director of Student-Athlete Support Services in 2016.

Prior to arriving at Mercer, Brownback received his bachelor’s degree in education from Gardner-Webb University. He served as a manager for the men’s basketball program during his senior year. After graduating from Gardner-Webb, Brownback taught English and history at the middle school level in North Carolina and Virginia; he additionally served as a varsity and junior varsity basketball coach.
