MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team's four-match winning streak came to an end on Sunday evening after the Jacksonville Dolphins left Bear Field with a hotly contested 2-1 Atlantic Sun Conference victory.
Mercer (5-4-1, 1-1-0 A-Sun) was out-shot by Jacksonville (4-5-1, 1-0-0 A-Sun) 14-12, but did hold a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in a game that was very physical and featured a combined nine yellow cards between the two squads.
The Dolphins got on the board first in the 33rd minute when senior Daniele Campailla angled a one-time shot in the upper right-hand corner of the goal past Mercer goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.
The goal allowed by Ranjitsingh was the first the Pickering, Ontario native had yielded in over 371 minutes of game action as the freshman net minder had tallied three-straight shutouts coming into Sunday night's game.
Campailla added his second tally of the game in the second half after he received a cross at his feet and hammered home a shot low and to the right of Ranjitsingh to stretch Jacksonville's lead up to 2-0.
The Bears didn't give up, however, receiving a free kick goal from junior Josh Shutter in the 74th minute to make the score 2-1.
Mercer had a golden opportunity to tie the match up in the 85th minute when junior Richie Edmondson out-ran the Jacksonville defense to a loose ball, but his shot rolled just wide of the far post to end the threat.
Mercer is back on the pitch when it travels to Fort Myers for a match-up against No. 25 FGCU on October 7. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
