MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision to Campbell on Monday evening at Bear Field.
The Orange and Black out-shot Campbell 17-13 and had a huge 9-3 disparity in corner kicks in the contest.
The exhibition was the first competitive action for either squad as each team prepares for the upcoming 2011 campaign.
Based on the early moments of the game it was easy to see that both squads were trying to feel each other out and gain some momentum. Things shifted the Camels way in the 31st minute, when sophomore Justin Franz hit a low hard shot that slipped past the diving attempt of freshman goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Campbell doubled up on the Bears early in the second half when sophomore Eduardo Rodriguez tapped in a rebound attempt to go up by a 2-0 margin.
The Bears tried to rally when sophomore Ryan King fired in a shot that was deflected past sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Hall to bring Mercer within one, at 2-1.
In the end, however, it would not be enough as Hall deflected a long shot by sophomore Cole Mitchell over the bar to thwart Mercer's last scoring chance and secure the win for Campbell.
Mercer hits the road next weekend when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to take on the College of Charleston in its final exhibition match of the preseason. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Patriots Point Athletics Complex.
